Sous Vide Precision Cookers: Cooking From The Future

In the 21st century, we are continuously developing technology to make everyday tasks in our lives easier. Cooking is not lost from this statement either. Kitchen utensils have become far more advanced in the last several years, to the point that tools once used by professionals are now being brought into the modern home. One piece of kitchen technology that I discovered and want to delve further deep into are Sous Vide pressure cookers. Sous Vide is a French term that means “under pressure”, and that is precisely what these devices do. These precision cookers are no ordinary pressure cookers at your mother’s house, they’ll exceed your expectations and them some. In this post, I’ll be talking about two Sous Vide precision cookers of the brands Anova Culinary and ChefSteps to show their similarities and differences. Enjoy!

The Sous Vide technology has been used in luxury restaurants for many years using a specific temperature to achieve a “level of doneness” with your food. With this method of cooking, it gives you the same results every. single. time. In addition, because of the fact that it’s cooking to perfection, your results come out juicier and more tender reducing the chance of your food drying out. This, as a result, decreases the chances of you wasting food.

But the pièce de résistance is that once the precision cooker gets to the desired temperature, it holds it there to prevent from overcooking. How perfect is that?

The precision cooker comes with an interface that is easy to use in setting up the time and temperature manually, or you can download the app on your mobile device set it up using either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

The Anova Culinary Precision Cooker is very simple to use and requires very little equipment that you already have in your home! What you’ll need is:

  • Your Precision Cooker
  • A large pot to hold your water in
  • A heavy duty Ziploc bag
  • Some binder clips to keep the Ziploc bag in place

Here I’ve provided a video to show you how an Anova Culinary Precision Cooker is used:

Lastly we have the Joule Sous Vide by ChefSteps. This precision cooker, although works the same as the previous product (mobile app interface), it has a different feel and style that others may appreciate. First, its model is much smaller than other Sous Vide products making it easier to store and travel with. Secondly it has a magnetic mount at the bottom the device if find using a clip to be a nuisance (the Joule is provided with an interchangeable clip too). In addition, it preheats at a much faster speed, blowing its competition out of the water. An LED to indicate if the device is heating the water and when it’s ready to cook. As if all these features weren’t good enough, you can connect your ChefSteps Joule to your Alexa!

Here is a video provided to show how to use a Joule Sous Vide:

Sous Vide appliances are the wave of the future, giving us access to tools and techniques that high profile chefs use. With this type of technology, it will become easier for us to cook the things we want even when our schedules make it almost impossible. There’s nothing more perfect than that.

  1. The smaller size and improvements make this item a ‘home’ chef’s dream. I had never heard of sous vide so thanks for sharing it with us. Programming it from your phone to ensure the steak turns out just right is a bonus!
